MTCC's "Malé Taxi Line" application, developed at a cost of approximately MVR 13 million, was hacked over the weekend, with personal customer data leaked on social media, raising fresh questions over the state-owned company's oversight of the project.
Some drivers using the platform and information circulating on social media indicate the breach was first noticed when driver names within the app began changing on their own. The service subsequently went down entirely on Saturday night, leaving customers unable to access it.
Data leaked online reportedly includes customers' names, phone numbers, wallet IDs and email addresses, along with message logs and trip details. The exposure has stoked concern among users of the service over how their information was secured.
